Monterey is a coastal paradise for recreation, water sports, golf, wine tasting, arts, dining, and festivals. There is a small toll charge for driving on the 17 Mile Drive, although if you stop off for a bite to eat and any of the restaurants en-route, this will usually be refunded. There are three main gates for entering and exiting the 17-mile drive—the Pacific Grove Gate to the North, the Highway 1 Gate on the Southwest and the Carmel Gate to the South which gives you direct access to Carmel-by-the-Sea. Be sure to pick up a 17-Mile Drive Map when you stop at the entry gate, just follow the marked route and enjoy the "21 Points of Interest" along the way:
- Shepherd's Knoll : Spectacular views of the valley and the Santa Cruz Mountains
- Huckleberry Hills : An abundance of native huckleberry bushes, this is one of the highest elevations in Del Monte Forest
- Poppy Hills Golf Course
- The Inn & Links at Spanish Bay
- Spanish Bay : This is a popular picnic spot
- The Restless Sea : An underwater rock shelf causes wave turbulence
- Point Joe : Early mariners often crashed on these rocks after mistaking this for the entrance to Monterey Bay
- China Rock : This landmark is named in honor of Chinese who settled in nearby
- Bird Rock Hunt Course
- Bird Rock : Bring binoculars if you have them (there's a row of telescopes on site if you don't) to get an up-close view of hundreds of birds, harbor seals and sea lions.
- Seal Rock Picnic Area
- Spyglass Hill Golf Course
- Fanshell Overlook : Fanshell Overlook attracts harbor seals and is closed during harbor seal pupping season April 1 to June 1
- Cypress Point Lookout
- Crocker Grove : Native pine and cypress trees are abundant in this 13-acre nature reserve
- The Lone Cypress : The Lone Cypress Tree is one of the most famous trees in the world
- The Ghost Tree
- Pescadero Point : The northernmost point of Carmel Bay and Stillwater Cove)
- The Lodge at Pebble Beach
